Fortune Wood

It looks like a piece of wood. Give it water and a little light, and it starts to grow.

Fortune Wood is a living stump of Dracaena fragrans — the plant known in Brazil as pau d'água, the water stick. It grows hydroponically, with no soil and no mess. You set it in its ceramic basin, add water, and wait for the first shoot to appear.

How to care for it

• Keep shallow water in the basin and change it regularly
